Do I have to give you my Instagram password?+
No, and there is no login form anywhere on this site. Every other unfollower app asks you to sign in to Instagram, which hands a third party access to your account and breaks Instagram's terms. FollowerOwl reads the data export Instagram already gives you, in your own browser. We could not act on your account if we wanted to — there is no connection to it.
Is my ZIP file uploaded to your servers?+
No. The file is opened in your browser and never leaves your device. You can confirm this yourself: open your browser's network panel before you drop the file, and you will see no upload. A 1.3 GB export produces the same network traffic as an empty one, because we read about 1 MB from inside it and never touch the rest.
How do I get my Instagram export?+
In Instagram: Settings → Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Download your information. Choose 'Followers and following' and the JSON format, and pick 'All time'. Instagram emails you a link, usually within a few minutes to a few hours.
Why do I need two exports to see who unfollowed me?+
Because a single export is a snapshot of one moment. It can tell you who does not follow you back right now, but not who left — nothing in the file records that. Comparing two exports from different days is the only honest way to know, and it is exactly what we do. Any tool claiming to show unfollowers from a single export is guessing.
How fast is it?+
Seconds. Reading a 1.3 GB export takes about 18 milliseconds of file reading because we jump straight to the three files we need. Comparing two saved snapshots takes roughly a tenth of a second even for very large accounts.
What do you store if I make an account?+
Three lists of usernames and the dates attached to them. That is all the parser produces — display names, profile pictures, numeric account ids, and everything else in the export are discarded on your device before a result exists. An account is optional and only matters for comparing exports over time.
Can someone else look up my followers here?+
No. Snapshots are readable only by the account that saved them. There is no directory, no search across users, and no public profile pages. Usernames are never globally searchable, by design.
Will Instagram ban me for using this?+
There is nothing to ban. We never connect to your account, never automate follows or unfollows, and never use Instagram's API on your behalf. Downloading your own data is a feature Instagram provides deliberately.
Can I delete everything?+
Yes, from your account settings, and it removes your snapshots and your account. You get an email when it is finished rather than a spinner that might be lying.
